American Idol Season 23 winner Jamal Roberts performed the national anthem at the 2026 College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship at Hard Rock Stadium.

On Monday, the 28-year-old Meridian, Mississippi, native delivered “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of the kickoff between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes. Roberts was accompanied by 18-year-old Maria Pernalete, who provided American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation.

A former physical education teacher at Crestwood Elementary School, Roberts rose to national prominence during his tenure on American Idol. His victory in the season finale was secured by a record-breaking 26 million votes, the highest total in the history of the television franchise.

Since his win, Roberts has established a significant presence in the gospel music industry. His debut single, “Heal,” reached number one on the Billboard Gospel charts, and he recently earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Gospel Performance/Song for his collaboration with artist Jonathan McReynolds. Giorgio Armani debuts first menswear line without founder as Milan Fashion Week ends

0

MILAN—Giorgio Armani’s menswear show—the first staged without any input from the brand’s founder, who died in September—closed Milan Fashion Week on Monday, presenting a winter collection built around silky, iridescent fabrics.

“Cangiante,” the Italian word for iridescent, was chosen as the title of the collection to describe something that remains entirely itself yet shifts depending on one’s perspective, according to the show notes.

“The metaphor lends itself naturally to Giorgio Armani’s style today,” they said.

“Leo Dell’Orco’s vision emerges naturally after 40 years working alongside Giorgio Armani, and from a desire to make a personal mark on what stands as his debut,” the notes added.

Dell’Orco, longtime collaborator and partner of the late designer, continues to oversee the menswear division after the death of Armani. He is also the fashion house’s main shareholder by voting rights and chairman of the foundation in charge of the sale of a stake in the company.

The new collection combined velvet, crepe and chenille with brushed cashmeres, felted wools and matte leathers, creating rich, tactile contrasts.

“It was a beautiful show marked by continuity, with great attention to detail and a magnificent selection of fabrics,” said Federico Giglio, chief executive of Italy-based high-end fashion retailer Giglio.com.

Dell’Orco stepped out at the end of the fashion show to greet the audience, accompanied by his nephew Gianluca Dell’Orco, who has worked for many years in the menswear design studio.

Shoaib Malik announces retirement from PSL

0

Veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has announced his retirement from the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), bringing an end to a decade-long association with Pakistan’s premier T20 tournament.

Malik, one of Pakistan cricket’s most enduring figures, confirmed his decision in an emotional statement on Facebook, thanking the league for shaping a significant chapter of his career.

“I cherish every single moment and friendship I have made on and off the field throughout my 10 years of the Pakistan Super League as a player. It’s time to call it a day. However, my passion and motivation to serve for the betterment of cricket will always stay. Thank you PSL,” Malik said.

Since the inaugural edition in 2016, Shoaib Malik has been a familiar presence in the HBL PSL, representing multiple franchises and remaining a dependable middle-order batter and part-time off-spinner.

Across his PSL career, Malik featured in 92 matches, scoring 2,395 runs at an average of 33.09, while also contributing 17 wickets.

Malik was a key member of Pakistan’s 2009 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup-winning squad and captained the national side in all three formats during his career.

Even after stepping away from international cricket, he remained active in global franchise leagues, showcasing remarkable longevity at the highest level.

Overall, the all-rounder played 557 T20 matches, scoring 13571 runs with the help of 83 half-centuries and claimed 187 in the format.

Sinner into Melbourne round two as opponent retires hurt

0

Jannik Sinner strolled into the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday when his opponent retired with the two-time defending champion in full control.

The Italian second seed led 6-2, 6-1 when France’s Hugo Gaston called it quits with an apparent injury after 68 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

Sinner faces Australian qualifier James Duckworth or Dino Prizmic of Croatia next.

“I saw that he was not serving at pace. It’s not the way you want to win the match, but he’s such a talented player,” said Sinner.

“So I knew from the beginning that I had to play a very high level and was trying to be as aggressive as possible, which I’ve done.

“I’m very happy to be back here, it’s a very special place for me.”

Sinner had made a sticky start, falling 40-0 down on his serve in the first game of the match, before rattling off three aces to hold.

It was about the only blip as the 24-year-old quickly found his devastating range to assert his authority over the 93rd-ranked Frenchman.

Sinner, who comfortably defeated Alexander Zverev in the final 12 months ago, raced to the first set in 37 minutes.

The 25-year-old Gaston had brief treatment between sets from the trainer and when they resumed Sinner tightened his grip on the contest.

Sinner romped through the second set and Gaston shook hands.

Should he win three titles in a row in Melbourne, Sinner would join Novak Djokovic as the only men in the Open era to do so.

Bencic makes light work of Boulter

In-form Belinda Bencic swatted aside an erratic Katie Boulter for the loss of five games on Tuesday to fire a warning shot at the Australian Open.

Tenth seed Belinda Bencic swatted aside Britain’s Katie Boulter at the Australian Open.

Switzerland’s Bencic, back in the top 10 for the first time since having a baby, was emphatic in winning the first set 6-0 in just 26 minutes on Margaret Court Arena.

The Briton made her work harder in the second set before the 10th seed came home 7-5.

The 28-year-old Bencic arrived in Melbourne on the back of winning all five singles matches at the mixed teams United Cup, including victories over world number two Iga Swiatek and seventh-ranked Jasmine Paolini.

It earned Bencic the event’s most valuable player award and propelled her inside the world’s top 10, somewhere she has not been since giving birth to daughter Bella in April 2024.

“It helped so much to start the season well,” she said.

“I feel so comfortable here in Australia. The energy is great.

“I’m really trying to play the Australian Open for Team Switzerland,” she added, referencing the vibe she felt playing for her country at the United Cup.

Bencic broke Boulter immediately and consolidated to love before breaking again to take firm control at the onset.

An out-of-sorts Boulter won just four points across the opening three games and it didn’t get any better, with Bencic racing through the opening set.

Boulter, with fiance Alex De Minaur watching courtside, was a different player in the second set, finally finding some traction to hold serve in the opening game.

Broken again in game seven, Boulter bounced back immediately to make a match of it. But Bencic kept coming and ultimately was just too good.

Bencic was ranked 421 at the start of the 2025 season, but making the last 16 at the Australian Open a year ago convinced her she could return to the upper echelons of tennis.

Titles in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo saw her race back up the rankings.

Injury-hit Monfils bows out of final Australian Open

0

Tennis showman Gael Monfils bowed out of his 20th and final Australian Open on Tuesday with a mix of pain and regret as he fell to an injury-hampered 6-7(3) 7-5 6-4 7-5 defeat in the first round to local qualifier Dane Sweeny.

The 39-year-old Frenchman had flashes of his trademark flamboyance and somehow made a game of it despite being severely restricted in his movement amid a heady atmosphere at Kia Arena.

“My journey started in 2003 with you guys, now we are in 2026 and somehow it’s the finish line. Thank you so much for this amazing ride, you guys have been unbelievable,” Monfils told the cheering fans who gave him a standing ovation.

“I’ve got a lot of great memories here … I’ve been very lucky to play here for many years. Thank you very much.”

Home fans, some toting inflatable kangaroos, were in full voice as world number 182 Sweeny roared back from 5-3 down and took four straight games to claim the second set.

But even their cheers tapered as Monfils’ movement diminished to a crab-walk across the baseline.

Sweeny rode an early break and took the third set, soon after Monfils’ wife Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian tennis professional, arrived at her husband’s players’ box for moral support.

A match seemingly headed for a deflating finish spontaneously re-ignited, though, as Monfils went for broke with his shots and the 24-year-old Australian froze with nerves.

Monfils thrashed a backhand down the line to break Sweeny and duly surged to a 4-1 lead.

The rally halted abruptly there, though, with Sweeny showing admirable composure to claim six of the first seven games and surge to his first win in a Grand Slam match.

New Zealand register first ODI series win in India despite Kohli ton

0

New Zealand overcame a valiant 124 by Virat Kohli to down India by 41 runs and seal their first-ever ODI series victory on Indian soil on Sunday.

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips guided New Zealand to 337-8 with a fourth-wicket stand of 219 after the tourists slipped to 5-2 and 58-3 in Indore.

Mitchell made 137 and Phillips hit 106 off 88 balls.

The Black Caps then bowled out India for 296 in 46 overs despite Kohli’s 54th ODI century and clinched the three-match series 2-1.

The in-form Kohli, who plays just the 50-over format after retiring from Test and T20 international cricket, threatened to pull off the chase in a 99-run seventh-wicket partnership with Harshit Rana, who made 52.

New Zealand left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox returned figures of 2-42 from his 10 overs after captain Michael Bracewell left the field with a calf injury and did not return.

Mitchell led the team in Bracewell’s absence, which also left New Zealand a bowler short.

Zak Foulkes and fellow seamer Kristian Clarke took three wickets each.

India slumped to 71-4 before Kohli hit back in an 88-run stand with Nitish Kumar Reddy, who made 53, and then with Rana.

Kohli struck 10 fours and three sixes in his 108-ball knock before he was caught off Clarke and walked back to a rousing ovation after his 85th international century.

Earlier the in-form Mitchell picked up from where he left off after his match-winning 131 not out in the second ODI, which levelled the series at 1-1.

Mitchell reached his ninth ODI ton with a single off Ravindra Jadeja before Phillips also brought up his hundred.

Arshdeep finally dismissed Phillips caught behind to end the marathon stand and Mitchell soon followed, falling to Mohammed Siraj.

New Zealand wobbled, losing four more wickets but Bracewell hammered an unbeaten 28 off 18 balls.

The teams next play five T20 matches in a final tune-up for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka between February 7 and March 8.

Trump shares messages from Macron offering G7 meeting after Davos

0

Emmanuel Macron has sent a “private message” to Donald Trump offering to organise a G7 summit in Paris on Thursday in which Russia could be invited on the sidelines, the French president’s entourage confirmed.

Trump posted this message on his Truth Social network, in which Macron also proposes inviting Ukraine to the meeting as well as Denmark, to discuss disagreements over Greenland.

“My friend, we are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” Macron said in his message.

“I can set up a G7 meeting after Davos in Paris on Thursday afternoon,” Macron wrote, referring to the gathering of global elites in Switzerland where the US president is set to be in attendance.

“I can invite the Ukrainians, the Danish, the Syrians and the Russians in the margins” of the meeting, he added.

Trump’s relations with Macron hit a new low Monday when the US president threatened 200 tariffs on French wine over France’s intention to decline an invitation to join his “Board of Peace”.

“Tariff threats to influence our foreign policy are unacceptable and ineffective,” a source close to Macron told AFP on Tuesday.

Spain mourns as train disaster toll rises to 41

0

Spain began three days of national mourning on Tuesday for 41 people killed after two high-speed trains collided in the country’s deadliest train accident in over a decade.

The disaster took place late Sunday when a train operated by rail company Iryo, travelling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Adamuz in the southern Andalusia region.

It crossed to the other track, where it crashed into an oncoming train, which also derailed.

The death toll rose to 41 after the body of a passenger was recovered on Monday evening from one of the Iryo train carriages, the regional government said.

Over 120 people were injured, with 39 still in hospital, including four children, it added.

Flags flew at half-mast on public buildings, television anchors wore black, and cabinet ministers curtailed public appearances as Spain observed the first of three days of national mourning.

Heavy machinery was deployed on Monday to lift the most severely damaged train carriages and give rescuers better access.

The head of Andalusia´s regional government, Juan Manuel Moreno, warned Monday it would take another 24-48 hours “to know with certainty how many deaths have resulted from this terrible accident”.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were scheduled to meet with rescuers and officials in Adamuz later on Tuesday.

Aerial footage of the crash site from Spain’s Guardia Civil police showed the two trains far apart, as rescuers in high-visibility neon vests worked nearby.

Among the survivors is a six-year-old girl who lost her parents, brother and cousin in the crash, according to Spanish media.

The 27-year-old driver of one of the trains was among those killed, daily newspaper El Pais reported.

The collision occurred in a hilly, olive-growing region accessible only by a single-track road, making it difficult for ambulances to reach the area.

Firefighter Angel Uceda, who was among the first rescuers on the scene, told Onda Cero radio that mobile phones were ringing beside injured victims as he entered the wrecked train carriages.

“It was harrowing, but we had to do our job and do what was needed,” he said.

Unlike the 2013 accident, the derailment occurred on a straight section of track, and the trains were travelling within the speed limit, officials said.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the first train to derail was “practically new” and the section of the track where the disaster happened had been recently renovated, making the accident “extremely strange”.

The company said around 300 people were on board its service from the Andalusian city of Malaga to the capital, Madrid.

Renfe, the operator of the second train travelling to the southern city of Huelva, said it was carrying 184 passengers.

Human error has “been practically ruled out”, Renfe President Alvaro Fernandez Heredia told Spanish public radio RNE.

Heredia also ruled out speeding as a cause of the accident. He said both trains were travelling just over 200 kilometres (120 miles) per hour, below the 250 kilometres per hour limit for that section of track.

Spain has Europe’s largest high-speed rail network, with more than 3,000 kilometres of dedicated tracks connecting major cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Malaga.

In Adamuz, where white buildings gleam among orange-lined streets, residents rushed to the town hall with supplies as news of the disaster spread.

“We started bringing water, blankets, everything we could,” Manuel Munoz, a 60-year-old olive oil factory worker, told AFP.

Among those offering condolences were Pope Leo XIV and French President Emmanuel Macron.
