- Rana Tanveer urges provincial governments to ensure purchase of wheat from farmers on notified support price
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister of Industries and Production and National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain has urged all the provinces to revise wheat procurement targets and ensure purchase of wheat from the farmers.
In letters to all four provincial chief ministers, federal Minister Rana Tanveer maintained that the provincial governments should ensure appropriate and necessary measures to meet wheat procurement targets.
The minister said the provincial governments should accelerate the process for achievement of wheat procurement target, keeping in mind the sensitivity of the wheat produce, production, storage, smuggling factor and different types of weather conditions in the provinces.
Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain also urged the provinces to ensure purchase of wheat from the farmers according to the notified support price. “It’s my pleasure to inform that wheat crop harvesting has started from the Southern parts of the country.
In order to provide fair return to the farming community, it is the prime responsibility of provincial governments to ensure its notified profitable support price,” the federal minister said in a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
“Since the upcoming wheat procurement drive 2024 is in boom and getting momentum in the upcoming couple of weeks; therefore, keeping in view the sensitivity of the crop, its production, hoarding and smuggling issues, the vagaries of weather and ripening time difference amongst the provinces, the procurement process should be expedited at the earliest,” the letter read.
“Provincial governments are requested to review and enhance their procurement targets and appropriate measures should be taken to meet these targets,” the minister stressed.“
In this context, Government of Punjab is requested to ensure notified profitable support price of wheat, review and enhance procurement targets and take appropriate measures to meet the assigned targets of crop season 2023-24 to stabilize the market,” the letter concluded.
