SC to hear pleas against civilians’ trial in military courts on July 18

ISLAMABAD, July 13, 2023: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday fixed the pleas challenging trial of civilians in military courts for hearing on July 18.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial leads a six-member larger bench which will hear the plea on July 18. The bench includes Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Yahya Afridi, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Ayesha Malik and Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi besides the CJP.

The next CJP, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, had excused himself from hearing the cases until the decision on the Practice and Procedure Act case. Justice Sardar Tariq Masood also agreed with Justice Isa while Justice Mansoor Ali Shah had distanced himself after the objection raised by the federal government.

Former CJP Jawad S. Khawaja, prominent lawyer Aitzaz Ahsan and others had approached the apex court challenging the trial of civilians in military courts.
